ExperienceI believe that guidance is a vital part of education, whether it's in a student's last year as an undergrad, or in elementary school when first learning to read. I got my Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Biochemistry from Virginia Tech. Presently I attend Virginia Commonwealth University studying to be a pharmacist. While at Virginia Tech, I worked as a tutor in science and math for elementary and middle school students. Teaching children gives me a satisfying feeling of accomplishment. Many of my pupils wrestled with the work and feared being wrong. As a tutor, I believe it is up to me to create an encouraging and nurturing environment where my pupils needn't be afraid, and learn how identifying the wrong answer helps to illuminate the path to the correct answer. I tell my pupils that no one is ever truly wrong. Besides teaching children, I have also instructed college students in freshman chemistry. I find this fear of the wrong answer still survives in many of my older students. The same maxim I use with my younger students assists the undergrads. I strive to encourage my students to be curious and empowered. My goal in tutoring sessions is to reach the point where we are just having conversations about the things the student is learning, because this means they are taking control of their own education.
