In education I strive to prepare students for success in the real world by helping them towards academic success. I grew up in Richmond and found in grade school math came easy to me and became my favorite subject. As a young adult, I chose to major in engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University to expand my knowledge and begin building a career with my math skills. In my first year at university, I was given the opportunity to be a math tutor for a nearby high school. It quickly became clear to me that many students struggled in math because they lacked a solid foundation in the subject. Without basic conceptual understanding, how could they succeed in their current and future math classes? What does this say about our current education system? I felt sad and motivated to help. Through my work I discovered that I could simplify material well, and my teaching skills grew. My teaching philosophies changed and I sought out more tutoring opportunities. I changed my major to math, with a concentration in education. I also decided to pursue a career in an inner-city environment. I am grateful for my learning experiences, and I give back to my community by being a passionate educator.
